Vietnamese Banks Seek $7 Billion from Investors Amid Economic Boom

As Vietnam's economy surges, banks are eyeing nearly $7 billion in share sales to attract both existing and new investors. Recent policy adjustments, including loosening restrictions on foreign ownership and increasing offshore borrowing limits, are seen as strategic moves to meet rising capital demands. The country's banking sector, which registered almost 10% growth last quarter, is on the fast track despite previous restrictions on foreign investments. Senior officials believe that enhancing foreign participation is crucial to sustaining economic momentum and tackling domestic funding challenges. This capital-raising initiative is projected to be one of the largest in Vietnam's banking history, with significant stakes being sold by major lenders such as Vietcombank and BIDV, among others. Analysts note that while interest from foreign strategic investors is growing, the government's approach remains selective rather than a full-scale liberalization. Amid these developments, various Vietnamese banks are also planning to issue bonds in international markets to bolster their capital base as the country navigates stricter global regulatory requirements.
