Netanyahu to Confer with Trump on Next Steps for Gaza Peace Plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that he will engage in pivotal discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month regarding the second phase of a U.S. initiative aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While expressing optimism about the approaching discussions, Netanyahu emphasized that several critical challenges remain unresolved, including the potential deployment of an international security force in the region. Speaking alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Jerusalem, Netanyahu said that the upcoming meetings would also cover strategies to dismantle Hamas’ governance in Gaza. Despite a two-month ceasefire, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of infringing upon the terms of the agreement. Netanyahu underscored the importance of ensuring that Hamas adheres to the ceasefire and fulfills its commitment to disarmament, which was part of the broader peace framework outlined in Trump's plan. He noted that Israel currently controls 53% of Gaza under this initial phase, which facilitated the release of hostages by militants and Palestinians held by Israel. As discussions continue, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel's determination to maintain security control over the West Bank, a point likely to be addressed in his talks with Trump. Merz reiterated Germany's willingness to assist in Gaza's reconstruction but emphasized that clarity on the U.S. approach is necessary before making any commitments.
